Patterson Circus mural gets started
Story by Kevin Gray, Staff Writer,
Miami County Republic
A wall-sized replica of a Patterson Circus playbill
poster will soon serve as a welcome mat to the Paola
Park Square at Silver and Peoria streets.
La Cygne artist Tim Prock spent Friday night with a
projector tracing the poster on the side of a building
owned by businessman Hannes Poetter. Prock
finished the first stage of the mural project soon
after midnight.
The poster is Poetter’s attempt to revive some of
Paola’s circus heritage. The Patterson Circus
wintered in Paola in the early years of the 20th
century and began every season with shows on Park
Square.
“I usually work on canvas, but I’ve done some
murals, too. I helped with a mural in the McDonald’s
next to the Sprint Center. We had to work on that
one at night because there were workers near the
mural location during the day,” Prock said.
Prock normally works on canvas using a variety of
formats, including oil, oil and acrylic, mixed media and
pencil and ink.
“Painting is painting no matter where and how you
do it,” he said. “My studio is basically my garage and
shop. It’s where I do my painting back in the woods
about 15 miles southwest of La Cygne.”
The mural is the first in the city since a mural was
painted on the side of Cactus Jack’s at 602 N. Pearl
St. The city allowed that mural to remain despite a
dispute over sign regulations, and city staff members
have since been working to create specific mural
regulations.
The Paola City Council was scheduled to vote
Tuesday on an ordinance creating mural regulations.
The results were unavailable at press time.
Councilman Jack Rowlett Jr. said Poetter has been in
contact with the city about his mural, and there
should be no problems as long as it is not advertising.
